Lessen Caregiver Stress

It just doesn't matter whether you are a professional caregiver or a family member who's taking care of his own elderly parent or sick child. As long as you are providing care and support for someone else, either for short periods of time or 24/7, then you are a caregiver. And with this being said, expect that sooner or later, you'll feel stressed out. Since it is a fact that stress affects one's health, it is indeed important for caregivers to know how they can reduce or lessen the burden that they feel.

1. Acceptance

There is no point denying that you are indeed tired, frustrated, angry or lonely. It will only make you repress negative thoughts and emotions that can lead to an even worse disaster once released. So at the onset of these feelings, accept them right away. It is normal for people to get tired as much as feel fed up, anxious, aggravated or lonesome. Accept these feelings and come up with ways on how you can actually get rid of them. For instance, you feel lonely for not being able to see other people as much as you used to. There's no reason why you should linger on that thought. Just simply make that choice to go out again or see your friends. Set aside any form of guilt or hesitation and remember that keeping this negativity to yourself will only compromise the quality of care that you provide as a caregiver.

2. Communication

It is okay to open up to others. When you are anxious or tired, let other people know. It is not advisable to keep such feelings to yourself. As they say, sharing your problem to another person doesn't guarantee that it will go away. However, letting it out will definitely lessen the burden.

3. Know your boundaries.

You're not a superhero. You just can't do everything on your own. So ask yourself what you can or cannot do. Let your family members know what you can contribute so that they can help on other things that are needed to be done. For professional caregivers, don't overdo yourself. Realize that you need breaks and also moments of relaxation.
